GEARSHIFT FUNCTIONS FOR INCREASED COMFORT, EFFICIENCY AND SAFETY
The MAN TipMatic1) semi-automatic gearbox reduces fuel consumption and increases driving comfort. Customised gearshift and start-up strategies, optimized for a wide range of applications, e.g. road, heavy-duty, off-road or emergency services vehicles, are perfectly matched to the driveline and guarantee efficient and comfortable driving.
Easy and comfortable operation
- The gear shift control located on the right-hand stalk switch allows selection of both driving mode and driving programme. This allows intuitive and safe operation in the immediate vicinity of the steering wheel.
Rapid gear changes
- The coordination between engine, clutch and gearbox allows for rapid gear changes. As a result, SpeedShifting allows for rapid shifting between the three highest gears (10th, 11th, and 12th), whereas SmartShifting combines fast shifting processes in all gears. Thus the momentum, for example on inclines, is maintained thanks to fast downshifts and fuel consumption is kept as low as possible.
Using the engine brake
- The electronically controlled engine brake of the upshift support (HSU) handles rapid gear skips of up to three gears – especially on inclines. In the process, the intelligent software calculates the optimum gearshift speed using data such as the accelerator position, the vehicle mass and the calculated driving resistance.
Comfortable idle speed driving
Idle Speed Driving enables comfortable driving at idle speed – the driver can thus manoeuvre the truck precisely or easily go with the slow-moving traffic flow. After moving off, the vehicle travels at a low idling speed of around 600 rpm, without the driver having to press the accelerator. If the engine torque is insufficient at idling speed, the MAN TipMatic1) shifts down.
The load detection of the MAN TipMatic1) gearbox selects the optimum gear for moving off – depending on the load. Furthermore, the high transmission-ratio spread and the gradient recognition support excellent moving-off behaviour.
If your truck has ever become stuck in snow or damp, loose ground, the rocking function can make pulling away easier for you. It automatically selects the best gear to reduce the torque to the drive wheels, thus avoiding wheel spins.
Available for the following models:
TGX, TGS, TGM, TGL
- Controls the speed of the truck
- Maintains the distance to traffic ahead
- Relieves the driver in heavy traffic by automatic braking and starting
KEEPING A RELIABLE DISTANCE
The MAN ACC Adaptive Cruise Control controls the speed of your truck while keeping a constant distance to the traffic ahead.
Two sensor systems: Radar and camera
MAN ACC works with two independent sensor systems: Radar and camera. The radar sensor measures the distance, position and speed of the truck ahead. In addition, the video camera behind the windscreen features object recognition and detects the lane markings. In this way, the vehicle ahead can be reliably detected even in complex road conditions and poor visibility.
Great ease of use
The multifunction steering wheel allows you to easily determine the desired speed of your truck. This speed is held without needing to operate the accelerator pedal. In addition, you can set the desired safe distance to the vehicle ahead in four different levels. When the road is clear, the vehicle accelerates to the desired speed set by the driver. If the system detects slower vehicles ahead, speed and distance are adjusted automatically.

- Monitors the areas to the right and left of your truck
- Warns of potentially hazardous situations when initiating a lane change
- Actively steers the truck back into the lane if a collision is imminent
A NEW OVERTAKING STRATEGY
The MAN lane change support LCS provides safety – even in the heaviest traffic. It uses radar sensors to monitor the areas to the left and right of your vehicle from a driving speed of 50 km/h (31 mph). If the sensors detect a dangerous situation when initiating a lane change, the driver is warned early, thus significantly reducing the risk of a collision with other road users.
TWO ARE BETTER THAN ONE: DOUBLE-STAGE WARNING
Stage 1: one light signal
The MAN lane change support LCS1) indicates whether an object is located in the warning area on the co-driver’s side by illuminating an LED module. This allows the driver to estimate when he can safely activate the turn indicator and start overtaking or go back into the lane safely afterwards.
Stage 2: 3 Light signals
If the driver activates the turn indicator or initiates a lane change, all three LED modules light up in the event of danger. The size of the warning zone is variable from 0 m to a maximum of 8 m to the front and 80 m to the rear (from the vehicle front). This depends in particular on the vehicle length and the relative speed between the own vehicle and the respective vehicle in the adjacent lane.
Available for the following truck models
TGX, TGS, TGM
- Warns the driver in emergency braking situations
- Stops the vehicle automatically in case of dangerous situations
- Warns following traffic with Emergency Stopping Signal (ESS)
TRAFFIC AREA MONITORING AND INTERVENTION DURING DANGEROUS SITUATIONS
The MAN Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) significantly reduces the risk of accidents in road traffic. The system detects emergency braking situations and warns the driver. If the driver fails to react, emergency braking is initiated in dangerous situations.
Two sensor systems: Radar sensor and camera
- The MAN Emergency Brake Assist (EBA)1) combines information from a radar sensor installed on the vehicle front and from a camera in the windscreen. Thanks to this sensor fusion, the system can detect dangerous situations even more quickly and securely, and initiate emergency braking in case of serious danger sooner. Camera and radar sensor permanently monitor the traffic area in front of the vehicle: Distances, positions and speeds of vehicles ahead are detected.
Optical and acoustic warning
- If there is a risk of collision, the driver is initially warned by a visual and acoustic signal.
Initiation of emergency braking
- If the driver fails to react, the MAN Emergency Brake Assist automatically initiates emergency braking. This is to avoid rear-end collisions. During emergency braking, an emergency stopping signal (ESS) is activated in addition to the brake lights. The hazard light system signals the emergency situation to surrounding vehicles by an increasing flashing frequency thereby reducing the risk of a rear-end collision. The MAN Emergency Brake Assist is part of the standard equipment on all MAN vehicles and fulfils all legal requirements. As standard, the MAN Emergency Brake Assist cannot be switched off.

- Reduces the steering force for directional stability on the road
COMFORTABLE STEERING
The electronically controlled MAN ComfortSteering system enhances the hydraulic steering system of your MAN truck with additional steering torque from an electric motor. The electronic control unit ensures that the ideal amount of electric steering force is provided in every driving situation.
Addition or subtraction of steering torque
- The sensors of the assistance system evaluate the steering inputs as well as vehicle data such as speed and loading. Depending on the driving situation, the active comfort steering supports your steering manoeuvres by adding or subtracting steering torque. If released, the steering wheel automatically returns to the central position.
Comfortable manoeuvring
- When manoeuvring, you benefit from the power-assisted support of additional electronic steering torque. Your MAN truck can be manoeuvred with particularly high precision and little effort.
Utmost directional stability
- At higher speed, the active steering system: reduces the steering force automatically by subtracting the electronic steering torque. This makes maintaining directional stability easier for you.

- Lane Departure Warning system (LDW): Warns of unintentional lane departure
- Lane return assist (LRA): Steers the vehicle actively back into the lane
DRIVER SUPPORT FOR SAFE LANE KEEPING
Helps you stay on track: The MAN Lane Departure Warning system (LDW) warns the driver in the event of unintentionally leaving the lane. And the MAN Lane Return Assist (LRA) actively steers your vehicle back into the correct lane – before a dangerous situation arises.
MAN Lane Departure Warning system LDW
- The Lane Departure Warning system LDW assists the driver with accurate lane keeping. If your MAN Truck touches the lane markings or leaves the lane without an activated turn indicator, an acoustic signal will sound. This is how the system increases active safety on monotonous sections of motorways and dual carriageways as well as during night-time journeys, thus preventing accidents. For this purpose, a video camera behind the windscreen continuously scans the left and right lane markings. The lane departure warning system is active from a speed of 60 km/h. It detects and takes into account deliberate driving at the outer edge of the roadside.
MAN Lane Return Assist LRA
- In addition, the Lane Return Assist LRA supports the driver with lane keeping by actively steering the vehicle back to the lane: If the vehicle shows signs of leaving the lane – without the turn indicator being activated – the system corrects the steering torque, thus steering the truck automatically back into the lane. The correcting steering torque can be overridden by the driver at all times. The Lane Return Assist (LRA) requires the vehicle to be equipped with the MAN ComfortSteering hydraulic steering system and is only available for the MAN TGX and MAN TGS.
